Introducing Savannah
In this month’s Teen Think Tank Project’s Alumni Spotlight, we are pleased to introduce Savannah Reira. Savannah is not only a talented cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy, she is also Teen Think Tank Project’s 2021 Racial Equity Cohort’s Most Outstanding Research Associate. Before enrolling in the Coast Guard Academy, Savannah was a member of our inaugural research cohort. We are excited to highlight her as our featured alumnus for the month of October!
Cultural Upbringing and Values
Growing up in a multicultural household, Savannah has always had a deep appreciation for diversity and inclusion. Her Hispanic heritage was a source of pride, and it instilled in Savannah a profound appreciation for embracing her cultural roots.
That respect for diversity was heightened when Savannah and her family moved to Lima, Peru. The experience helped her expand her horizons as she encountered diverse perspectives, lifestyles, and socioeconomic conditions. This experience impacted Savannah’s vision of the world and brought her sense of purpose into sharper focus.
Aspiration: The United States Coast Guard Academy
During her time in Lima, the idea of a career in the United States Coast Guard began to take root. The values of service and dedication instilled in her from a young age found a perfect match in the mission of the Coast Guard, so Savannah set her sights on attending the United States Coast Guard Academy.
Savannah’s transition to the USCGA was marked by the realization that the Academy was not just an institution for education and training; it was a place where she could embrace her culture and share it with others. The Academy’s Affinity Councils played a pivotal role in this journey.
USCGA Affinity Councils
These councils allow fellow cadets to connect and share their backgrounds and experiences. They provide a platform to celebrate cultural traditions, important holidays, and even practice and improve language skills.
Affinity councils are a bridge connecting cadets from diverse cultural backgrounds. They foster connections, enabling members to make new acquaintances, develop meaningful relationships, and enjoy moments of relaxation and friendship amid the demanding life at the Academy. These bonds carry students through their cadet years and serve them well in their future roles as Coast Guard officers.
Lasting Impact
Savannah’s deeply rooted cultural upbringing, experiences abroad, and experience as a cadet at the Coast Guard Academy have not only deepened her appreciation for diverse cultures and values but also fueled her unwavering passion for serving in the United States Coast Guard.
Savannah is currently a sophomore Government major at the Academy, where she is a member of the Bears Women’s Swimming and Diving team.
